Cellphones.. Fatal??

Procrastinating again this morning, woke up late, I sat in bed and watched the FOX 5 Morning News. I was finally starting to move, and get ready when I heard the anchor say that a new study has been done saying that cellphones may be the cause of brain tumors I was alarmed and of course, stopped moving and procrastinated some more. Needless to say I missed my first class, but have not touched my cell phone since... Who am I kidding? We all know as soon as I heard the deadly news I picked up my cellphone and called my Mom to tell her, Ironic right? The opening line was Cellphones more deadly than cigarettes. As stated in a previous blog I am an advocate for Anti-smoking. This statement is alarming, and I plan on looking into this further. Just another piece.. I am sure everyone can relate to this, because everyone and their mom has a cellphone.

The Last Season at Yankee Stadium

Since 1923 Yankee fans have flocked to E. 161st Street and River Avenue in the Bronx. Today is opening day, and it will be the last opening day this stadium sees. Many historical events have happened at the memorable Yankee Stadium. Lou Gehrig made his speech when he found out he was diagnosed with what is now known as Lou Gehrig’s disease. The infamous Babe Ruth had his prime years running through the field through the years. At the end of the season the doors will close leaving Yankee fans without a home, but not for long. The new stadium I am sure will hold many amazing winnings, and new memories for all the fans. I am a Yankee fan, but I have never been to a game. I plan on making an effort to see one in this last season.

One Tree Hill .. The beginning of it all

Everyone has their own opinion, or main character they choose to claim their “favorite”. Each character brings their own unique flare to the show. The tagline of this show is “Where nothing ever changed until one outsider changed everything”. The outsider they are referring to is star Chad Michael Murray also known as the series’ Lucas Scott and he did change everything. Within every season he makes a difference in each of the character’s lives. The show first aired September 23, 2003 and I have been watching ever since. He saved his brother’s life, made his best friend the happiest she has ever been, and through all the drama he holds the mold of these friends together. The show is about friendship, and that is the most important thing anyone can ever accomplish. A good friendship does not come by easy, and when you find one that lasts hold onto it forever.

Leaving Viewers in Suspense

As I continue to procrastinate I watch my weekly anticipated show One Tree Hill. This show has been running for about five years and each year it gets better and better. The show is filled with scandal, lies, love, all the themes a good “chic” show should have. I started watching this show with my best friend four years ago and now that she is away from college this is our time together. Yes I know, it is not like she moved to Guam, she is only upstate , but we call each other on commercials and at the end we share our opinions on the scandalous events that occurred in that evening’s show. Tonight Tuesday March 18, 2008 was the wedding event of the whole series. If you do not watch the show, I advise you start, the show has so many real life situations and sometimes I can turn to the show to help me through. Ultimately…. This show is amazing, and the episode tonight left all of us viewers in suspense. Will Nanny Carrie strike again? Will Dan be accepted back into the lives of his family? All these questions will be answered when the series returns on a new day Monday April 14 ,2008, on CW 11.

Procrastinating

Procrastinating is when you put off doing something for a long period of time. I happen to be an expert at doing this. I work well under pressure, but I waste my life doing nothing but sitting on the computer reading the latest headlines and surfing facebook. I often wonder "what did people do without the internet?" Well they probably did all their homework on time and got their rest. Television is no help either. God Forbid I miss a show, I tell myself I will just put it on to see the results and I end up sitting through a six hour marathon leading up to the result show. There should be medication for this. I believe that this “disease” of procrastinating can be fixed by eliminating all distractions, but what fun would that be. In conclusion, I chose to continue to procrastinate and in time the bags under my eyes from the lack of sleep will fade. KEEP ON PROCRASTINATING!

No True Definition

There is no true definition for Creative Non-Fiction.....

Literature has many different genres. There are dramas, comedies, mysteries, fictional literature, non-fictional literature as well as many others. Creative non-fiction is not something that can be defined in one word or phrase, but it is complex because within itself creative non-fiction has different categories. Creative non-fiction is more entertaining than just the truth.
The genre of “The Curve of Binding Energy” is creative non-fiction and although science is not my favorite subject, I feel the way it was written made it a story, of Taylor’s life. The truth and facts were told through interviews and mostly through the experiences through Taylor’s life and that is what I liked the most. I enjoy literature that reflects personal experiences.
According to Bruce Dobler's Creative Nonfiction Compendium, a contributor is Lee Gutkind. He has a degree in creative non-fiction. He talks about using real life stories in a creative non-fictional way. Stated in Bruce Dobler's Creative Nonfiction Compendium “The most important quality that a creative nonfiction writer can have, writes Gutkind, is passion: "A passion for the written word; a passion for the search and discovery of knowledge; and a passion for ... understand[ing] intimately how things in this world work." I fully agree with this.
Prior to reading “The Curve of Binding Energy” I wrote two different papers, both of which linked to passion. My passion is dance, and it helps me strive to be determined and courageous. I feel that passion is necessary to help illustrate creative non-fiction because passion turns the mood of the literature from boring to dramatic and serious. Passion helps entertain while establishing the truth and the facts.
Creative non-fiction is different from creative writing and journalism, because both can be sugar coated and logged down with “fluff” which is meaningless information used to make the story more entertaining. Creative writing can be a form of storytelling and can be seen in most types of genres such as romance, and drama. Journalism is seen in all types of literature. I feel that Journalism is certain sides of the truth, both having the ability to use the information they have and put a creative spin on things where as creative non-fiction uses passion to entertain and illustrate the truth in a more solid and straight way.
The methods of creative non-fiction can be used in writing academic papers, but not putting so much focus on our opinions and thoughts, but more or less on the facts and hard hitting issues of the topic. Creative non-fiction is way that we are college students can express the truth in a more entertaining way than just statistics and facts. By using personal experiences and creative language the genre of creative non-fiction becomes more striking and not so much a boring a topic.
There is no true definition for creative non-fiction. I like the way Lee Gutkind says that creative non-fiction is a passion for understanding. I agree because creative non-fiction is the greatest kind of literature, because it is filled with the truth and in the case of “The Curve of Binding Energy” it tells the story of a person’s life their struggles, and achievements, and it shows us their passion for life.

Worst Flu Season

If you thought by getting the Flu shot you would be safe this winter, you were wrong. It has been all over the news, and online and everyone wants to know why the vaccination did not work. On the CNN website I found information about the Flu shot. “The flu shot is a good match for only about 40 percent of this year's flu viruses, officials at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Friday”. On the news the other night I was flipping through the channels and I stopped to hear this representative speak. He said that the Flu hits hard. You wake up and go to work, or do what you have to do, and by 4 o'clock that afternoon you cannot even lift your head off the pillow. This is exactly what happened to me. I went to work on Sunday Febuary 19,2008 and by 3 o'clock I had to leave early. My fever went from 101.8 to 103.7 in an hour and there was no stopping it. The flu had wiped me out, and I could not even move for a week. Some symptoms of the Flu are fever, chills, dry cough, muscle aches, and extreme fatigue. Too bad the flu shot could not help the ones stuck in bed (like myself) suffering for a week. When I was finally able to get in to see a doctor I was prescribed Tamiflu, which miraculously stopped the fever within two days and by the fourth day of being on it I felt about 95% better.

Cigarettes - Why Smoke?

Millions of teens and adults all over the world smoke cigarettes and are not fully aware of how it is harming them. Why smoke? If you really think about it, you’re not only risking your health but your risking the health of others. When it really comes down to it smoking is an addiction and that is the reason people cannot stop. The question is why do people even start smoking? First off, there is nicotine in cigarettes, the mind and body become used to it, and soon people need it to feel normal. Secondly peer pressure, which is found in all ages, teens and adults smoke to fit in, feel popular. Sometimes, peer pressure is all it takes, and then another smoker enters the world. Thirdly, if family members smoke it is often common to see teens follow in their parent or guardian’s footsteps. This is common in teens seeking attention, negative or positive the message is the same. I found a statistic while searching through Google and it was alarming. “9 out of 10 tobacco users start before they're 18 years old”. The majority of those teens do not quit. Smoking also affects your looks. Smokers often have yellow teeth, and reek of smoke. Smoke lingers on clothes, hair, etc. Smoking not only affects the health of you but it also affects the health of others. Second hand smoke KILLS and that is no exaggeration. Smoking is bad. The statement is a fact. Why take years off your life? Why look and smell bad? Why make yourself sick? Why risk the health of others? All these questions should be on your mind if and when you decide to light up. I know half of all college campus's smoke, and I know that no one is going to walk out of class one day and miraculously decide to stop. I know it is hard to stop, but think about it. Save yourself and others. Life is beautiful; give yourself the chance to live it. Don’t smoke, and if you do smoke stop.

Grammys !

As I sat down to watch the Grammys I realized that all award shows like this are always a “big deal” because everyone wants to know who the best is. Hosted by Tom Hanks, the Grammys began and it's audience both in person and watching on television anticipated the performances and results. This year I felt was different. I know that the Grammys always provides recognition but this year I felt it was more than that. The Grammys opening performance was Alicia Keys singing with a screen in which Frank Sinatra was being projected off of. They sung the song together, using Sinatra’s old school style with Keys’ new style. I feel that you need to know where you were before you know where you can go. During the middle of the program they provided more recognition to artists “back in the day” and the audience of course enjoyed this. Music is a big part of many people’s lives, and everyone who is trying to make a difference should be recognized. Alicia Keys’s performance with figment Frank Sinatra is a perfect example of using the past to benefit in the future.
